Roy Kalmerton and Marion/Bob Schuchardt Scholarships

SCCA Scholarship Offerings:

Each year, the SCCA awards scholarships to college students who are majoring in an Environmental Management field such as Resource Science, Law Enforcement, Forestry Resources Administration, Fisheries Management, Wildlife Management, Zoology or Environmental Education.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, have completed a minimum of one FULL-TIME year in college AND have attained sophomore status.  The applicants must have home residence in Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du Lac or Ozaukee counties but may attend any college or university.

THE ROY KALMERTON SCHOLARSHIP

The Sheboygan County Conservation Association has been awarding scholarships for many years.  In 1990, they decided to name the scholarship “The Roy Kalmerton Scholarship” in honor of now retired State Conservation Warden Roy Kalmerton, who worked in Sheboygan County.

The Association chose to honor Roy for his involvement with youth and decided this would be the best way to accomplish this.  Roy is one of the few wardens in the State who worked his way up in the Department of Natural Resources without a college education.

Roy has worked hard to instill in our youth the love and respect for the outdoors.  he gave of his time to help youth learn about nature and its beauty.  He worked with the 4-H groups, Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Program and Hunter, Boat and Snowmobile education courses, just to name a few.

Besides working with young people, Roy worked with educational programs for adults as well.  some of the areas he is involved with include The Evening with the Whitetail and the GRIP Program (Grass Roost Ikes Program).  Roy was instrumental in organizing the annual banquet sponsored by the Conservation Association to raise funds for numerous conservation projects in Sheboygan County.  He also was very instrumental in the establishment of the Skill Center at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds, which is used by adults and youth alike, to learn about conservation.

Because of Roy’s untiring work in the educational areas, it was the unanimous decision of the Conservation Association to name the scholarship program in his honor.  We know the recipient will be actively involved in the protection of our environment and will be encouraged to continue working towards a clean environment for all of us, and for the future generations.
